Incident Overview

A section of historic red brick wall on Castle Street collapsed early Sunday morning (February 8) following a reported vehicle collision near the Market Street junction in Trowbridge. Witnesses reported the structural failure occurred in the early hours, with Wiltshire Council confirming damage assessments began immediately.

Emergency Response and Safety Measures

Wiltshire Council’s highways team responded promptly after receiving damage reports. Cabinet member for Highways and Streetscene, Councillor Martin Smith, detailed their actions: “Our officers have visited the site, removed loose brickwork and coned off the area while arrangements are made to clear the remaining bricks.”

The council confirmed the wall’s structural integrity has been temporarily stabilized pending full repairs. According to UK Highway Safety Guidelines, such incidents require immediate cordoning due to risks from unstable masonry and potential secondary collapse.

Public Safety Advisory

Authorities have implemented a pedestrian detour around the affected section opposite The Shires shopping center. Cllr Smith emphasized: “Please avoid using this footpath and follow the signs in place. We will reopen the footpath as soon as it is safe to do so.”

Historic England records indicate similar red brick walls in Trowbridge date to the 19th century textile boom, requiring specialized conservation approaches during reconstruction.

Ongoing Assessment

Council engineers continue monitoring the site, with complete debris removal pending further structural evaluation. The highways team emphasizes that final repairs will follow Conservation Area guidelines to preserve the street’s historical character.

Motorists are reminded to report collisions involving infrastructure to police non-emergency services (101) and councils via official channels, as required by the Road Traffic Act 1988.
