After spending a night with Barnsley’s taxi enforcement team, Councillor Andy Wray says they’re among the top in the UK. The Rockingham ward councillor called it an “eye-opening experience” that proves residents should feel safe using local cabs. “Our teams are active, consistent, and totally committed to keeping both drivers and passengers safe,” Wray told a council meeting.
Behind the Scenes: Operation Taxi Check
Wray joined CASUALTY police and licensing officers during surprise roadside inspections. Taxis and private hire vehicles were pulled over for instant safety checks. He described Barnsley’s operation as “smooth” and “well-executed,” with officers efficiently examining vehicles.
The Wolverhampton Shock
But the night revealed troubling differences between regions. Barnsley requires clear taxi signage on doors, while Wolverhampton-licensed vehicles operate under looser rules. “I learned those cabs can’t display anything identifying them as taxis except the license plate,” Wray explained. “No door signs – nothing. That makes them way harder to spot.”
Enforcement Gaps Exposed
Even more startling was a chat with an officer from another area who confessed: “We haven’t run checks like this in years.” Wray told council members, “That single statement says everything about why our system works.”
