Offshore Worker Fined After Late-Night Taxi Assault
The Incident
A Night Out Turns Violent
Thomas Van Holten, a 29-year-old offshore oil rig worker, got into a violent argument with a taxi driver in Elgin on November 30, 2024. The trouble started around 11 p.m. after Van Holten and two friends were picked up on the High Street.
The Attack
When the taxi stopped at a shop, things escalated when Van Holten returned. He became aggressive, ripped the taxi’s meter and interior mirror off, and then headbutted and pushed the driver. The driver was left with a bloodied and swollen nose.
What the Driver Reported
Why It Started
The taxi driver said the argument began because the vehicle tried to drive away while Van Holten was outside the shop. This led to a confrontation when he got back in.
The Damage
At first, the driver thought the total damage and losses were about £2,000. However, the court confirmed the physical damage to the car itself was valued at £500.
In Court
Van Holten’s Admission
Van Holten’s lawyer, Robert Cruickshank, admitted his client’s actions were “unacceptable.” He stated that Van Holten “fully accepts his responsibility” and is remorseful, calling it “a matter of regret.”
The Judge’s Stern Warning
Sheriff Ian Duguid noted that Van Holten had a similar incident in 2018. The judge warned the expectant father that he was “in the gravest danger of ending up in jail” for this kind of behaviour, calling the offences “unfortunate” and stating his conduct was “very much on the line.”
The Sentence
Financial Penalties
For the assault and criminal damage, Thomas Van Holten was ordered to pay a £500 fine. He must also pay £1,000 in compensation to the taxi driver for the injuries and damage.
