EV charge point grants increased to £500 as government extends support to 2027

UK Makes EV Charger Grants Way Bigger

More Cash for Home Chargers

The government is boosting money for installing electric vehicle (EV) charge points at home. Starting April 1, 2026, grants jump to £500 each—that’s a 40% increase from the old £350. This help lasts until March 2027.

Who Can Apply?

This bigger grant is for lots of people:

  • People who rent their homes
  • Flat owners
  • Homeowners without driveways
  • Businesses
  • Schools

It also covers residential landlords and households that park on the street.

Why This Is a Big Deal

The £500 grant pays for nearly half of a typical home charger install. Charging an EV at home can cost as little as 2p per mile. Imagine driving from London to Birmingham for about £3.50! Compared to a petrol car, EV owners can save up to £1,400 a year on fuel when using home electricity.

Other EV Help Available

This grant is part of a bigger plan. There’s also the Electric Car Grant, which takes up to £3,750 off new EVs like the Nissan Leaf. Over 55,000 drivers have already saved with that.

For homes without driveways, a £25 million program helps install chargers using safe pavement channels for cables.

Making Things Less Complicated

To cut confusion, the government is merging eight different charge point grants into just five. This should make it easier for households and businesses to apply and get support.

More Public Chargers Coming

The UK already has around 88,500 public charge points. The government is spending £600 million to add 100,000 more in the next few years. Local councils get funding to boost charging in their areas, with help from a government service to pick the best spots.

What the Government Says

Keir Mather, the Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, explained: “We’re making EV ownership affordable for everyone—not just people with driveways. Bigger grants mean families, flat owners, renters, and small businesses can install a charger for almost
