Concurrently, Companies House, the UK’s official business registry, categorized Mackenzies Bar as “in liquidation,” a legal process where a company’s assets are sold to pay debts, often signaling closure.
Clarifying the Liquidation Misconception
Despite these official markers, Gael Mackenzie swiftly clarified to the Swindon Advertiser that Mackenzies is not closing. Instead, the business underwent an “internal restructuring,” a strategic financial and operational overhaul common in hospitality to optimize resources without ceasing operations. This distinction is crucial: liquidation typically implies termination, whereas restructuring aims for renewal. The bar reopened on February 27, 2024, aligning with Mackenzie’s vision for revitalization.
A Comprehensive Refurbishment: Blending Rustic Charm with Modern Flair
Manager Thamires Pereira detailed the extensive renovations to the Adver, emphasizing continuity of the venue’s beloved character. “We have completely refurbished from the top to the bottom, but we are keeping the light and rustic vibe,” Pereira stated. The industrial theme has been modernized for enhanced aesthetics, making it more inviting. Key upgrades include expanded lighting in the main bar area, with dynamic colored lights in the evenings to shift ambiance. The garden now features a sheltered section and repositioned heat lamps for year-round comfort, addressing common patron feedback on outdoor seating.
Enhanced Offerings and Extended Hours
Mackenzies maintains its core service hours—breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week—with unchanged Happy Hour deals (4 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily, including two-for-one cocktails and discounted prosecco, wine, and spirits). Notably, Friday and Saturday nights now extend until 2 a.m., supported by resident DJs and themed events every Sunday and Thursday. For sports enthusiasts, five large screens broadcast live matches, broadening appeal beyond dining.
The Galleries: A Versatile New Space for Community and Events
A highlight is the restyled Galleries on the first floor, previously underutilized due to lack of direct access. Now equipped with an exclusive front entrance, this space is poised for private hires—parties, corporate functions, buffets, or sit-down meals—while remaining open to the public with full table service during non-booked times. “It’s such a nice space and sometimes it gets a bit missed. So we are hoping to get people up there, do events up there, get it open, so people can actually see it,” Pereira explained.
