Taxi Driver Stabbed in Violent Robbery; Dashcam Evidence Secures Conviction
A late-night taxi fare in Cheshire turned into a brutal attack, leaving a driver injured and his vehicle stolen. The incident, which occurred on December 6, 2025, in Moston, has resulted in a significant prison sentence for the perpetrator, thanks in part to critical evidence captured by the taxi’s own dashcam system.

A Night of Intoxication and Violence
The sequence of events began when Daniel Eckersley, 39, of Salford, knocked on a resident’s door on Dragon’s Lane around 9:51 p.m., requesting a taxi. Intoxicated, he left the address once the vehicle arrived. Moments later, the resident heard screams and witnessed Eckersley violently assaulting the driver. During the confrontation, Eckersley stole the taxi and fled towards Middlewich, leaving the driver with a stab wound to the leg.
The victim immediately reported the robbery and assault to police. Officers located the stolen vehicle less than three miles from the scene and discovered a knife in the passenger footwell. The driver provided a description of his attacker: a man in a grey tracksuit and baseball cap.
Rapid Investigation and Arrest
A public tip led officers from the Firearms Unit to a Middlewich pub, where a man matching the description was seen entering and then leaving for another nearby pub. At 10:45 p.m., less than an hour after the robbery, an officer from the Roads and Crime Unit stopped Eckersley. He identified himself as Daniel Bryan but was found to be severely intoxicated, with a roadside breath test showing he was over three times the legal drink-drive limit. He was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and was later linked to the robbery.
Detectives recovered two SD cards from the taxi’s dashcams. The footage provided irrefutable visual evidence, showing Eckersley’s threats, the stabbing, and the theft of the vehicle. Eckersley, who also used the aliases Daniel Brein and Daniel Bryan, offered no comment during his police interview.
Sentencing and Police Commentary
At Chester Crown Court on March 6, 2025, Eckersley pleaded guilty to robbery, possession of a knife in a public place, drink driving, and driving without insurance. He was sentenced to six years and eight months’ imprisonment.
Detective Constable Vickie Wallace of Cheshire Constabulary emphasized the severity of the crime and the role of technology in solving it: “No one should go to work expecting to go through such a terrifying situation as the one Daniel Eckersley subjected his victim to. This case highlights the importance of having dashcams in your vehicle, especially if you are involved in taxi services or any occupation that requires engaging with the public for long periods. The footage from the dashcams — capturing Eckersley’s initial threats, the stabbing, and the theft of the vehicle — was vital evidence that helped us secure this sentence.”
The case underscores the unpredictable dangers faced by public service workers and the tangible value of vehicle recording systems in modern policing and the pursuit of justice.
