Dereham Taxi Hijack: Woman Arrested After Destructive Joyride

A routine taxi fare in Dereham, Norfolk, escalated into a serious criminal incident on the evening of Wednesday, March 18, culminating in a collision and multiple arrests. The event has raised local concerns about vehicle theft and dangerous driving.

Incident Unfolds on Commercial Road

The sequence of events began at approximately 7:40 p.m. when a woman hired a taxi and was dropped off at her requested destination on Commercial Road. According to a statement from Norfolk Police, the situation turned criminal the moment the driver completed the fare.

Instead of exiting the vehicle, the woman is alleged to have moved into the driver’s seat and accelerated away without the taxi driver’s consent. This act immediately constituted the offence of “taking a vehicle without consent” under UK law, often referred to in legal contexts as TWOC (Taking Without Owner’s Consent).

The unauthorised drive was short-lived. Police report that the woman’s control of the vehicle ended when she crashed the taxi into “a number of other cars” in the vicinity. The collision brought the incident to a swift and destructive conclusion, causing damage to multiple stationary or moving vehicles.

Legal Charges and Immediate Aftermath

Following the crash, the woman was transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for injuries sustained in the collision. Once medically cleared, police moved to arrest her.

She was charged with a series of serious driving-related offences. These include: taking a vehicle without consent, dangerous driving (a charge that focuses on the standard of driving falling far below that of a competent and careful driver and would be obvious to a reasonable person), driving while disqualified (a separate offence indicating she had no legal entitlement to drive), and driving while under the influence of drink or drugs (an offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988). The cumulative nature of these charges suggests a significant breach of multiple legal safeguards designed to protect road users.

After her arrest, she was conveyed to the Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for formal questioning. This facility is the primary custody suite for Norfolk Police in the region, where suspects are interviewed prior to any charging decision or court appearance.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact

The investigation remains active. Norfolk Police are likely to be gathering evidence from the crash scene, examining dashboard camera footage (if available from any involved vehicles), and taking statements from the taxi driver and other motorists whose vehicles were struck. The specific location and extent of the collision on Commercial Road are details that may be released as the inquiry progresses.

This incident underscores the severe legal and personal risks associated with vehicle theft and impaired driving. For residents of Dereham, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential for a single moment of impulsive action to result in significant criminal charges, injury, and community disruption. Further updates will be provided by authorities as the case develops through the criminal justice system.
