LEVC expands into Gibraltar with delivery of 11 iconic electric TX black taxis

-

The British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar has launched a new era in its public transport with the arrival of 11 zero-exhaust emission capable LEVC TX taxis. This landmark delivery, facilitated through a partnership between the London EV Company (LEVC) and the Gibraltar Ministry of Transport, marks the Coventry-based manufacturer’s first formal entry into the territory’s taxi market. The move is a strategic component of Gibraltar’s broader initiative to enhance air quality and reduce transport emissions while serving its dense urban environment and significant tourist population.

Gibraltar’s Strategic Shift to Electrified Urban Mobility

Gibraltar’s compact geography and high traffic density present unique challenges for sustainable transport. The adoption of the LEVC TX addresses these by providing a purpose-built, zero-emission capable vehicle suited for high-utilisation urban duty. The formal handover was celebrated at a press event attended by Gibraltar’s Minister for the Environment and Transport, John Cortes MP, and senior LEVC representatives, underscoring the project’s governmental priority.

This initiative aligns with Gibraltar’s environmental targets, reflecting a trend among small, high-density jurisdictions seeking scalable, low-emission transit solutions. The TX’s arrival introduces the iconic ‘Raven Black’ livery of London’s licensed fleet to the Rock, blending a globally recognised design with modern electric technology.

Engineering for a Unique Urban Environment: The TX’s Technical Edge

The LEVC TX is not a retrofitted vehicle but a ground-up design built for taxi duty. Its eCity powertrain combines a 33kWh battery with a 1.5-litre petrol range extender, delivering a pure electric range of up to 78 miles and a total combined range of approximately 333 miles. This extended-range capability is particularly valuable in Gibraltar, where potential constraints in widespread, fast-charging infrastructure could otherwise limit operational flexibility for drivers. The design minimises downtime, a critical factor for a fleet operating in a 24/7 tourist and resident economy.

Accessibility and Heritage: The TX’s Dual Identity

Beyond zero-emission capability, the TX maintains the legendary accessibility of the London black cab. It features an integrated wheelchair ramp, seating for up to six passengers, hearing induction loops, braille controls, and high-visibility access points. This ensures compliance with inclusive transport policies and provides a universally welcoming service for Gibraltar’s diverse community and visitors.

For the territory’s tourism sector, the vehicles serve as a moving ambassador. The Hon Christian Santos GMD MP, Minister for Equality and Tourism, noted, “These iconic British taxis will be one of the first, very visible expressions of Gibraltar’s identity to visitors to the Rock. Importantly, they are also fully
