In late January 2025, the Swindon Advertiser reported that Gorse Hill Chinese Takeaway on Cricklade Road had received a food hygiene rating of zero out of five following an unannounced inspection by local authority officers on December 19, 2024. A zero rating, under the UK’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) run by the Food Standards Agency, indicates that “urgent improvement is necessary.” The finding immediately raised concerns among local customers about the safety and standards of a long-established business.
What the Inspection Found: A Broad Failure of Standards
The environmental health inspector’s assessment covers three core areas: the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, the hygienic handling of food, and the management of food safety. According to the report, Gorse Hill Takeaway was found to require “major improvements” in all three categories. This comprehensive failure points to systemic issues rather than a single minor oversight, such as inadequate cleaning schedules, poor food storage practices, or insufficient staff training on hygiene protocols
