Private Hire Vehicle Crashes into South Yorkshire Garden, Sparks Community Relief

A quiet residential street in Kimberworth Park, Rotherham, was left in shock on Saturday after a private hire vehicle collided with parked cars and crashed into a garden.

South Yorkshire Police were called to Roughwood Road around noon following reports that the driver had lost control of the vehicle.

The Collision and Immediate Aftermath

The collision caused significant damage to a Toyota Aygo owned by David Gill, who had parked the car outside his home before heading on a day trip to York.

The force of the impact was so great that it pushed Mr. Gill’s car into a Ford Fiesta owned by his friend, Iain Doherty.

Victim’s Perspective: Shock and Frustration

Mr. Gill received the news while shopping in York and returned home immediately. “It was a massive shock, I couldn’t believe it,” he said, expressing frustration after having only recently finished paying for the vehicle. “It feels like you can’t have anything nice without someone coming along and wrecking it.”

Community Response and Safety Reflections

Despite the damage, those living nearby say the outcome could have been much worse. Mr. Gill added: “Now we just think it is really fortunate that no one was killed.”

The incident has prompted local residents to reflect on road safety in their typically tranquil neighbourhood, with many expressing gratitude that the accident occurred when foot traffic was light and no pedestrians were in the garden or on the pavement.

Ongoing Investigation and Taxi Company’s Statement

A spokesperson for Phoenix Taxis stated that they believe the driver had to swerve to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

South Yorkshire Police has been contacted for further comment on the investigation. Authorities are likely to review local traffic camera footage and interview witnesses to establish the full sequence of events and determine any potential traffic offences.

The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of road travel, even in low-speed residential areas, and highlights the importance of defensive driving and vehicle safety standards for both private and commercial operators.
