Major Rail Disruption Between London Paddington and Reading After Depot Fire

A fire at a train depot near London Paddington station has caused significant disruption to rail services across the south of England on Wednesday, March 1st. The incident has led to the cancellation of multiple services, including the 9:44am and 10:51am trains from Swindon to London Paddington, with wider knock-on effects expected for travellers from Wiltshire and beyond.

Cause and Immediate Impact

The emergency began with a fire adjacent to the tracks in the Paddington area. For critical safety reasons, power to the overhead electric wires—which supply electricity to trains on this busy route—was immediately switched off. This necessitated the complete closure of all lines between London Paddington and Reading, a vital corridor serving towns in Berkshire, south Oxfordshire, and connecting the west country to the capital.

Official Statements and Service Updates

Great Western Railway (GWR), the primary operator on the affected route, issued an initial statement confirming the closure. It read: “Due to a fire next to the track between London Paddington and Reading all lines are closed. Disruption is expected until 10:30 01/03.” The statement detailed the impact: “Train services between London Paddington and Reading will be cancelled or delayed,” and provided customer advice: “The fire brigade are responding to a fire at a train depot near London Paddington… no trains are running between Reading and London Paddington until the fire is safely extinguished.” GWR also arranged for tickets to be valid on alternative services operated by South Western Railway and Chiltern Railways.

In a later update, National Rail, which coordinates passenger information across the network, confirmed the fire had been extinguished and power restored. However, a spokesperson cautioned: “As a result of the level of disruption caused by this incident, trains in the area remain majorly disrupted and it will take some time for service to recover on the affected routes.” The national body projected that “Major disruption is expected until 12:00,” with the potential for cancellations, delays of up to 60 minutes, and revised timetables.

Wider Context and Traveller Advice

This incident underscores the vulnerability of the UK’s rail infrastructure to unforeseen emergencies and the cascading impact a localised event can have on a national network. The Paddington-Reading line is a critical artery for commuters and intercity travellers, meaning disruptions here affect services from the West Country, including routes from Temple Meads in Bristol.

Travellers are advised to check real-time journey planners on the National Rail Enquiries website or app before setting out. Those holding GWR tickets should be aware of the acceptance arrangements with other operators but should also expect crowded conditions on alternative routes. The recovery process involves not only restoring power but also conducting safety examinations of the track and infrastructure before a full service can resume, explaining the prolonged disruption even after the fire is out.
