Police Appeal for Witnesses After Swindon Town Centre Disturbance

Wiltshire Police are seeking witnesses following a daytime altercation outside Swindon’s historic Savoy building on February 10. The incident occurred at approximately 1pm on Regent Street, a busy thoroughfare lined with shops and restaurants.

Incident Details and Arrests

According to police reports, two unidentified men chased and threatened a man and woman near the Savoy, a local cinema and entertainment venue first opened in 1936. Officers responded within minutes of receiving multiple emergency calls.

Police spokesperson DS Emma Richards confirmed: “We arrested two men in their 20s on suspicion of making threats to kill and using threatening behavior to cause fear of violence. Both have been released on conditional bail pending further investigations.”

Community Safety Context

While violent crime in Swindon decreased by 8% year-over-year according to December 2023 Police UK statistics, authorities emphasize the importance of reporting public disturbances. The Savoy incident occurred during peak lunchtime foot traffic, with hundreds of potential witnesses present.

How to Assist Investigators

Detectives are particularly interested in:

  • Dashcam footage from vehicles traveling on Regent Street between 12:45pm-1:15pm
  • Mobile phone recordings from pedestrians
  • Accounts from local business employees

Witnesses can contact Wiltshire Police at 101 (reference: 54260016888) or anonymously via CrimeStoppers. The investigation team maintains an active presence in the area, reviewing CCTV from nearby establishments like the adjacent Regent Circus development.

Local Response and Safety Measures

Swindon Borough Council’s community safety team has increased patrols following the incident. Councillor Vinay Manro stated: “We’re working closely with police to maintain Swindon’s reputation as one of England’s safest urban areas. Anyone feeling vulnerable can access free safety apps through our Safer Communities initiative.”

Ongoing Investigation Status

As of February 12, forensic teams continue to process evidence from the scene. Police stress that bail conditions prohibit the suspects from entering Swindon town centre pending trial. Victims are receiving support through Wiltshire’s witness care program.
