Melksham Café’s Backyard Veranda Wins Official Approval
Antico Café, located in Melksham’s Littlebrook Centre, built a neat wooden veranda with a roof at the back of their spot—but they did it without asking the council first. Now, after applying for permission retroactively, they’ve been given the okay to keep it!
What’s the Veranda Like?
The structure is a lightweight, open-sided platform with a covering. It fits a couple of tables and chairs, plus a ramp for easy access. It’s become a chill hangout, especially for dogwalkers who dig the sheltered outdoor vibe.
Why Did They Build It First and Ask Later?
The café team put up the veranda in January and then applied for “retrospective planning permission.” In their statement, they called it an “attractive addition” that respects the conservation area and actually makes it look better.
Locals Are All For It
During the planning process, the council surveyed residents. Guess what? Every single one of the 15 respondents supported the veranda! Melksham Town Council also had zero objections. People said it spruced up what was once a plain courtyard and gave the area more character.
Council’s Decision: It’s a Go
The planning officer reviewed everything and noted that the veranda is modest, unobtrusive, and doesn’t mess with the town centre’s vibe. The report stated it “does not adversely affect the character or appearance of the area.” On February 20, the council officially granted permission.
Why This Is a Big Deal
This story shows that even if you start a project without permission, if it’s loved by the community and fits in well, you might still get approved. The veranda is now a permanent fixture, boosting the café’s appeal and the local scene.
