Tragic Double Loss on Wiltshire Railway Line: Person and Missing Dog Killed in Separate Incidents

Emergency services responded to a fatal incident on the railway line near Royal Wootton Bassett on Easter Sunday afternoon. At approximately 2:30 pm, police, fire, and ambulance crews were dispatched to a casualty reported near Junction 16 of the local railway network. Despite the rapid response, which included the landing of a Great Western Air Ambulance team nearby, the injured person was pronounced dead at the scene. The air ambulance team was subsequently stood down.

Separate Discovery of Missing Pet

While attending the scene of the human fatality, officers from the British Transport Police made a second, unrelated discovery. In the vicinity, they located the body of a dog, later identified as Nala, a missing Rottweiler. According to a statement from British Transport Police provided to local news outlet Wiltshire 999s, the deceased animal was “safely recovered” from the tracks. Police were clear to state that the dog “was not involved” in the incident involving the person and had not been with the deceased individual.

Nala had been reported missing from a farm located off the A3102 Swindon Road. Her owner later confirmed that she had been struck by a train after disappearing. The owner shared a heart-wrenching update, stating, ‘I’ve just found Nala. She was hit by a train, my worst nightmare. We heard the train horn and heard the hit. “Thank you, everybody for trying for me. At least I was the one that found her.’

This incident underscores the profound and often overlapping dangers present near railway infrastructure. The British Transport Police routinely advise the public on the severe risks associated with trespassing on or near railway lines, whether by individuals or pets. For the community of Royal Wootton Bassett, a town historically associated with repatriations and solemn gatherings, this dual tragedy represents a significant loss.
