Firefighters Prevent Catastrophe After Shed Fire with Hazardous Cylinders in Netheravon

On the morning of Thursday, 2 April, a swift and coordinated emergency response unfolded in the Wiltshire village of Netheravon. Fire crews from two counties raced to tackle a significant shed blaze, confronting an immediate and potentially explosive danger inside the structure.

Coordinated Multi-County Response to High-Risk Incident

The initial 999 call triggered the dispatch of three fire appliances. Units from Marlborough and Amesbury in Wiltshire were joined by a crew from Andover in neighbouring Hampshire, highlighting the regional collaboration essential for major incidents. En route to the scene, a critical update was relayed to the firefighters: multiple gas cylinders were stored within the burning shed. This information fundamentally changed the tactical approach, as heating cylinders can cause pressure to build, leading to violent explosions known as boiling liquid expanding vapour explosions (BLEVEs), a well-documented hazard in firefighting.

Expert Handling of Hazardous Materials Containment

Upon arrival, the primary objective was twofold: extinguish the fire and mitigate the cylinder threat. Firefighters, some wearing breathing apparatus to protect against smoke and fumes, focused on cooling the cylinders with water jets. This is a standard, life-saving procedure to reduce internal pressure and prevent rupture. The cylinders were carefully removed from the immediate heat of the fire to a safe area for continued cooling and monitoring. Simultaneously, two hose reel jets were deployed to directly attack the flames consuming the shed.

The professionalism of the crew was evident in the outcome. The shed was completely destroyed by the fire, but the rapid and correct handling of the cylinders prevented a far more serious incident. Crucially, the fire did not spread to any of the other sheds located in close proximity, a testament to the effective firebreak tactics and situational awareness of the team.

Official Account and Fire Safety Context

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service provided the official summary: “Crews from Marlborough, Amesbury and Andover were mobilised to a shed fire in Netheravon. En route to the incident it was confirmed cylinders were inside the shed. These were removed and effectively cooled down and monitored. The fire was extinguished using 2 Breathing apparatus and 2 hose reel jets. Crews checked the adjoining sheds for fire spread thankfully these were unaffected.”

This incident underscores the unpredictable dangers of storage sheds, which often contain flammable liquids, fuels, or compressed gas cylinders. The UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises that such materials should be stored in well-ventilated, secure locations away from buildings, and that households and businesses should be aware of their presence for emergency planning. The firefighters’ training in hazardous materials (HAZMAT) response was pivotal in managing this high-risk scenario safely.
