Driver Flips Car in ‘Dangerous Overtake’ on Wiltshire’s A338
A serious road traffic collision on the A338 near Burbage, Wiltshire, on Easter Monday (6 April) resulted in a car overturning, highlighting the severe risks of reckless overtaking maneuvers.
The Incident on a Busy Holiday Route
Emergency services were called to the scene just south of Burbage at approximately 5pm. The collision involved a black Mini Cooper and a black Vauxhall Corsa close to the local landmark, Chopper’s Cafe.
According to initial police reports, the driver of the Vauxhall Corsa was attempting an overtake on the wrong side of the carriageway. This dangerous maneuver led to a loss of control, causing the Vauxhall to flip onto its roof. The A338 is a major trunk road connecting Salisbury to the south coast, often experiencing heightened traffic during holiday periods like Easter, making such incidents particularly hazardous.
Emergency Response and Medical Outcome
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulage attended the scene, reflecting the severity of the initial call. The male driver of the Vauxhall Corsa received treatment from paramedics for multiple injuries sustained in the rollover. Subsequent medical assessment confirmed his wounds were non-life-threatening. He was subsequently transported to a hospital by land ambulance for further care. Fortunately, the driver of the Mini Cooper walked away uninjured from the dramatic collision.
Road Closure and Investigation
The collision necessitated a full closure of the A338 in both directions for approximately three hours. This allowed emergency crews to safely manage the scene, extricate the vehicle, and clear debris. Wiltshire Police are investigating the circumstances, with the “wrong side overtaking” cited as a key factor. Such incidents underscore the importance of adhering to road traffic laws, especially on high-speed rural routes where overtaking opportunities may be limited but perceived as necessary by some drivers.
The road has since reopened. Authorities often use such events to remind motorists of the Highway Code rules regarding overtaking, which strictly prohibit crossing the centre line to pass another vehicle when it is unsafe or on a blind bend or crest—conditions common on roads like the A338.
