Transport for London (TfL) has announced a major, multi-week closure of the A40 Westway, a critical arterial route in west London. From 1 pm on Friday, 20 March, until late April, the entire stretch between the Westway roundabout and the Marylebone flyover will be shut in both directions. This shutdown will remove one of London’s busiest strategic corridors from the network, affecting up to 96,000 vehicles that typically use this section daily and placing significant pressure on surrounding roads and diversion routes.
Why the Closure is Necessary: Safety-Critical Engineering
The shutdown is essential to undertake complex, safety-critical renewal work on the Marylebone flyover structure. Engineers must replace two critical expansion joints. These components are vital as they allow the concrete flyover to safely expand and contract with temperature changes and the constant stress of heavy traffic flow. According to TfL, these joints have reached the end of their serviceable life, and their failure
