Major Hillside Rescue Saves Child After 200ft Fall at Westbury White Horse

A dramatic and complex rescue operation unfolded on the slopes of the iconic Westbury White Horse in Wiltshire on the evening of Saturday, 7 March, after a young child fell approximately 200 feet down the steep hillside. The incident, which occurred around 6pm, prompted a significant multi-agency response to navigate the challenging terrain and deteriorating weather conditions to reach and recover the casualty.

Coordinated Emergency Response to a Remote Landmark

Emergency services were swiftly deployed to the local landmark following reports of the fall. The operation was led by Wiltshire Search and Rescue (WILSAR) and the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, working in conjunction with the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust. Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) paramedics were already on scene alongside local ambulance crews upon the arrival of the specialist teams.

As daylight faded, fog rolled in across the hills, and temperatures dropped, around 45 personnel were involved in the major rescue. The first WILSAR volunteers, including a qualified Lowland Rescue Incident Commander, arrived on scene within just 19 minutes of the initial call for help, demonstrating the rapid mobilisation capability of the local volunteer team.

Overcoming Terrain and Weather Challenges

The casualty was located just under half a kilometre from the nearest accessible track. While an off-road vehicle could reach part of the way, the final approach to the patient had to be completed on foot due to the steep, obstacle-strewn terrain. To ensure safety for the rescue teams navigating back in the low-visibility fog, a “breadcrumb trail” of cyalume light sticks was laid to mark a secure route.

Specialist rescue equipment was transported to the scene, including scene lighting, a basket stretcher, hypothermia blankets, and a stretcher wheel. While an air ambulance helicopter was considered for a potential winch extraction, the on-scene commanders determined that a ground-based technical rope rescue system would be the most appropriate and safest method for this specific location and situation.

Technical Rope Rescue Execution

The technical rescue team from Westlea Fire Station took the lead on the extraction, assisted by three experienced WILSAR volunteers. The team established ground anchors to secure twin rope lines. An attendant, harnessed and equipped, was then carefully lowered down the approximately 200-foot slope to the casualty.

A mechanical advantage system—a pulley setup designed to multiply pulling force—was then configured to haul the stretcher, with the attendant and immobilised child aboard, back up the hillside. Once on more level ground, the stretcher team manually carried and “caterpillared” the stretcher over remaining obstacles. The final leg of the journey to the waiting ambulance was made smoother using the stretcher wheel, a crucial tool for reducing crew fatigue and patient movement over longer distances on rough but passable ground.

Outcome and Community Praise

The child, who had been kept immobilised throughout the ordeal, was transported to a nearby hospital. As of the following day (Sunday), the child remained in hospital for treatment. A spokesperson for the emergency services involved relayed that, thankfully, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The spokesperson added a note of admiration: “It was noted by all involved that despite his young age, he showed remarkable maturity and calmness in a situation that some adults would struggle with!” The successful outcome was attributed to the seamless coordination between the volunteer search and rescue team, statutory fire services, and ambulance personnel, whose combined expertise and equipment were essential for the complex, technical rescue in demanding conditions.
