Man in His Eighties Dies Following Incident at Emersons Green Pub

A man in his eighties has died after an incident at a Wetherspoons pub in Emersons Green, South Gloucestershire, on the afternoon of Wednesday, 1 April 2020.

The emergency response was substantial, reflecting the protocols for a sudden medical event in a public location. Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance was deployed, alongside two double-crewed land ambulances from the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT). An ambulance officer and the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART)—a specialist unit trained for complex environments—were also sent to the scene on Westerleigh Road.

Emergency Services’ Coordinated Response

Medics provided immediate treatment to the man at The Emerson’s Green pub. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The swift mobilization of the air ambulance and HART team underscores the nature of the call, which was initially reported as a sudden collapse requiring advanced life support.

A spokesperson for SWASFT confirmed the call details: “We were called at 13:32hrs on Wednesday 01 April to an incident in Emersons Green, Bristol. We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an air ambulance, a responding officer, and the hazardous area response team to the scene.”

Police Investigation and Next Steps

Avon and Somerset Police attended following the ambulance service’s request. Their preliminary assessment indicates no criminal elements. A police spokesperson stated: “We were called by the ambulance service to a premises on Westerleigh Road, Emersons Green, Bristol, at around 1.50pm yesterday (Wednesday 1 April) following the sudden death of a man. Officers attended and we are treating his death as non-suspicious and the next of kin has been informed. We will prepare a file and carry out enquiries on behalf of the coroner.”

The reference to enquiries “on behalf of the coroner” is a standard procedure in England and Wales for unexpected deaths. The coroner will open an inquest to establish the cause of death, which may involve a post-mortem examination. The police file will support this judicial process.

Emersons Green is a residential and commercial area located on the northeastern outskirts of Bristol, near the M4 corridor. The incident has been handled as a medical emergency rather than a crime scene.
