Big Taxi Safety Sweep in Warwick

On Thursday, 13 February 2026, Warwick District Council joined forces with the police and DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) experts for a major check-up on the district’s taxis and private hire cars. The goal? To make sure every vehicle on the road is safe and legal for passengers.

How Many Vehicles Got Inspected?

During this operation, a total of 53 licensed vehicles—both hackney carriages (traditional taxis) and private hire cars—were thoroughly examined. Inspectors looked at everything from tires to lights to paperwork.

What Problems Did They Find?

Most drivers were following the rules, but a few vehicles had serious issues that meant they couldn’t be driven anymore.

Vehicles Banned on the Spot

Three taxis were immediately taken off the road:

  • One had tire tread so worn it was below the legal minimum—super dangerous for grip.
  • Another was stopped for illegal window tints that blocked too much light and non-standard number plates that didn’t meet regulations.
  • A third had a broken indicator light, making it hard for other drivers to know when it was turning.

Minor Issues to Sort Out

On top of that, 14 vehicles had smaller licensing problems, like missing or incorrect documents. Enforcement officers will be chasing these up to make sure everything gets sorted quickly.

Why This Check Matters

Cllr Jim Sinnott, who looks after community safety in Warwick, explained why these checks are so important: “Taxi drivers are key for getting people around, especially those who need a reliable ride. It’s crucial that their vehicles are safe and legal to protect passengers and everyone else on the road.”

He added: “It’s awesome that most vehicles passed the test with flying colors. For the ones that didn’t, our team will be on it to ensure they comply with all the rules.”

Keeping Rides Safe for Everyone

This sweep shows that Warwick is serious about safety. By working together, councils, police, and DVSA help make sure that when you hop into a taxi, you can trust it’s roadworthy. Drivers are reminded to stay on top of their vehicle checks—it’s not just about avoiding fines, but about looking out for their passengers and the community.
