Driver Arrested After Collision Displaces Electricity Pole in Pewsey

A 52-year-old woman from the Pewsey area has been arrested following a significant road traffic collision on Sunday morning, 22 March. The incident occurred on Wilcot Road, near Pewsey Cemetery, shortly after 11:00 AM, when a black Ford Focus left the carriageway and struck critical infrastructure.

Incident Details and Immediate Damage

According to Wiltshire Police, the Ford Focus first collided with and destroyed two wooden planters located outside a residential property. The vehicle then struck an electricity pole with sufficient force to snap it from its base and displace it approximately one metre from its original position. Despite the dramatic displacement, the pole remained upright and attached to the live electricity cables, a factor that emergency services noted as mitigating immediate catastrophic risk.

The driver of the vehicle, a 52-year-old woman, left the scene on foot. Officers subsequently attended her home address. During this follow-up, she allegedly failed to provide a mandatory sample of breath when requested, leading to her arrest on suspicion of an offence related to driving under the influence.

Coordinated Emergency Response

Multiple agencies responded to the incident. A fire crew from Ludgershall attended to secure the scene, addressing potential hazards from the damaged pole and vehicle. As the property of the regional power network operator, SSE was formally notified and dispatched engineers to assess the damage and carry out necessary repair work to restore full safety and service integrity.

Given the severity of the collision and the need for a safe working environment for repair crews, Wiltshire Police closed Wilcot Road in both directions for several hours. This closure caused local disruption but was deemed essential for public and responder safety during the stabilization and repair operations.

Investigation and Condition of Those Involved

The driver was taken to a local hospital as a precaution following her arrest. Wiltshire Police confirmed that, thankfully, there were no reports of serious injuries resulting from the collision. The investigation into the exact circumstances, including the cause of the vehicle leaving the road and the events leading to the alleged refusal to provide a breath sample, remains ongoing by Wiltshire Police.

This incident underscores the potentially devastating consequences of a single-vehicle collision on community infrastructure. The swift, multi-agency response highlights established protocols for handling such events, where police, fire, and utility companies collaborate to manage safety, investigation, and restoration efficiently.
